Monday 8 February 2010: When the boat comes in

My life has taken an unpredicted aquatic turn in the last 24 hours.

It all started yesterday evening, when Bella and I sat down to watch Finding Nemo. She seemed OK when the pointy-toothy fish ate Nemo's mum and all his brother and sister eggs at the beginning, but when the scary diver took nemo away on the speedboat, her world fell apart.

Eventually, consoled, she insisted she wanted to carry on but only got as far as the shark scene before Layla had to take her off to bed. Poor thing.

This morning, I thought it might be good to go to Deep Sea World to overcome her fear by seeing some real sharks. As luck would have it, the sharks were being fed by divers bearing a remarkable resemblance to those who took Nemo and she had a rare time. Bonus. Two fears conquered for the price of one (or so you'd be forgiven for thinking if you hadn't seen the prices at that place).

We celebrated with fish fingers and a trip back to Aquacadabra to restock the Chinese Water Torture Cell.

Three new fish (Stanley, Flat and Maurice (because we remembered Nemo's dad's name started with 'M' but could remember the rest (turns out it was 'Marlin' but never mind))) safely moved into their new home, we sat down to watch the remaining hour of our movie.

She was much more into it, completely unafraid of the sharks (although I had to hold her hand when the deep sea angler appeared) and tearless. Until the very end that is, when everyone got back together to live happily ever after and she suffered another emotional breakdown.

If her mum's anything to go by, she'll never be cured of that.
