Streetscape

NE Broadway between NE 23rd and 24th Avenues.

Next week this view will look completely different when the two trees in front of the blue building are due to be felled. I tried to take a face on picture of the trees but they are just too big, I decided on a shot that shows them in relation to their surroundings instead.

Portland Parks & Recreation (Urban Forestry Division) has had notices pinned prominently on the trees, the notice reads:

"These two pin oak trees (Quercus palustris), longtime residents and honored citizens of the Irvington Neighborhood, will be leaving the neighborhood soon. If you look closely you will see the trees have outgrown their current planting areas and site conditions.

Over time, the maintenance of these trees has extended their lives for years by monitoring their conditions, pruning the canopy, and reducing roots as needed to address sidewalk and building damage. Although this strategy has worked for a long time, the root removal that is now necessary will destabilize and eventually kill the trees, creating significant safety concerns.

Although we will miss these trees and all of their contributions to the human comfort and welfare of the Irvington Neighborhood, we will work with the property owner to replant trees appropriate for the location.

These trees are scheduled for removal during the week of March 14 - 17, 2014."

I shall miss them.
