Spire of St Mary's Cathedral Glasgow

St Mary's Cathedral in Glasgow was opened in 1871, designed by the George Gilbert Scott. At the same time he was also designing the cathedral in Christchurch.

Here is the tower and spire of St Mary's Cathedral. Apart from the top of the spire in Christchurch (which was copper covered wood), the tower/spires were very close in design.

Internally the building can be seen to be close relatives, some have said twins, with similar and identical features

As a result of the damage to Christchurch Cathedral from the earthquake on 22 February 2011, a benefit concert is being held in St Mary's Cathedral on Monday 28 February 2011 at 20:00. Choristers from Glasgow Chamber Choir, Strathclyde University Chamber Choir, the RSAMD, St Mary?s Cathedral Choir, Edinburgh Singers, Glasgow University Chapel Choir, Edinburgh Royal Choral Union and the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Scottish Voices will come together at the cathedral in Glasgow?s West End. Two New Zealanders currently studying at the RSAMD will also perform at the concert.

The main piece to be sung will be Durufle's Requiem, supported by other music.

If you are in the Central Belt of Scotland and can make why not go along, enjoy some good music and help raise money.
