Saturday 14 January 2012: Foulshaw Moss, Cumbria
With the mercury hovering just above zero, my glamorous assistant and I got to the Moss shortly before dusk and clambered up the icy steps of the viewing platform.
The silence was broken only by the lonely mewling of a buzzard.
England's rarest raptor - Circus Cyaneus The Hen Harrier, did not show up to roost....someone must've tipped it off to my presence (they have eluded me for over 30 years).
For a Circus performer, I'd say that was just unprofessional.
