Thursday 18 March 2010: Brief Encounter
I am finding that walking around with a camera results in strangers starting conversations with me. I guess it's like having a baby or a dog.
While I was looking at a falling apart old building this man started telling me about all of the beautiful old buildings he was hired to demolish in the area. He told me stories about the people living in them and the businesses hidden behind the peeling walls.
I find it sad that we get rid of our history instead of carrying it on to the future.
This graffiti will soon be gone. But not the memory of this lovely chance meeting.
PS He let me take this picture of him.

Great story! Great portrait. Sad story too though. Sad to lose old buildings. Mind you, I am not one to go on about old buildings just cause they are old. Some are junk and need to be removed. But I hate to see the loss of these old places when they are perfectly viable.

Great shot! And a lovely story too. It is amazing the stories people have to tell and the things they have seen that you would have never known if you hadn't have stopped to talk to a stranger!!

Great story to go with a great photo. It is funny how carrying a camera around will bring people out of the woodwork.
There is so much history in old buildings....more than we'll ever know.
And thanks for the funny comment...it is tough to catch my breath sometimes. But I do love your description...."wonderful handful." I may have to run with that one :)

Oh yeah! I'm loving your shots lately (sorry I've not been commenting) this is a great portrait and write-up. Seems like you're moving your photography to another level lately. His face is great.

This is so excellent -- sounds like it was a mutually rewarding exchange. People with good stories like to have listeners!
