People Watching...

I had lunch in a popular coffee chain yesterday. I managed to get a comfy seat by the window which is great for a bit of people watching but the most intriguing people behaviour was happening at the next table.

Two gents sat down at the table with coffees clearly together then proceeded to open newspapers and start reading. Outside of the sitting down ritual, no words were spoken. They just read their respective papers in silence.

Now my thought processes went through a couple of situations that may have explained this behaviour as I found it subtly odd. Meeting for coffee is generally for a catch up or information exchange.

At first I thought they may have been waiting for lunch to be delivered to the table but handily, this coffee shop uses a system of large wooden numbers to denote where food is to be delivered and this was absent from their table.

Maybe they were waiting on someone else to join them and were filling the time until, with a bit of newspaper reading. Maybe it's something completely different that I wouldn't ordinarily considered such as a small newspaper reading club meeting.

Who knows... It's a wee example of how facinating humans can be, not only in their behavior but also in their (in this case, my own) perception of the world around them.
