About Home and Away

I work at home as a writer. Quite often this involves quite detailed and contrived avoidance of writing. Not by tackling housework, though, because my relationship with housewifeliness is inverted and bad: I write in order to avoid it. Ordinarily I love writing. I live and breathe and sleep writing. Days when sentences aren't made and remodelled are usually bad days. But sometimes the blank white page of the screen is oppressive and it's good to get outside of the verbal world and look at things. I take a lot of pictures.

For two and a quarter years, until October 2007, we lived in Orkney, and you'll see, should you look at my back catalogue, that it's awash with island landscapes. As others on this site have said, it's hard to come up with an ugly Orkney picture (though the periphery of Kirkwall isn't that quaint, and nor are its council estates).

Now though, there's a new direction, something new unfolding. We've moved to Fife: me, husband, the three children, two horses and two dogs, for the winter, and our island house is up for sale, and with any luck we'll be unencumbered by March when the rental is finished and will begin a new life in semi-rural connectedness. I've just finished writing a book - about Alzheimer's - and am daring to embark on a novel. Probably just the one. It's my winter challenge. And hopefully the blips will take on an invigorated new feel, also.

I'm currently wasting time on facebook. Andrea Gillies. Drop in and say hi...
