About citoyen du monde

I eat beans and rice every. single. day.

For a year, this is my life in Managua, Nicaragua, working for an organization called Manna Project International (www.mannaproject.org). There is a tiny one-room open-air building on a dirt road in Nicaragua where I spend my days letting little dark-eyed children crawl their way into my heart while I teach them about Van Gogh, long division, Haiku poetry, and the Spanish syllable "ch," most of which they will never hear of in school (where they copy sentences from the chalk board into their notebooks). Within these four walls in the tropics- and on the dirt roads outside- I act as loan officer (microfinance program), syllable-clapping-coach (Spanish literacy program), verb conjugator extraordinaire (English program), and crazy-hair-hippie-art-teacher (creative arts program), and Yoga instructor (women's exercise program).

We also run a child sponsorship program in La Chureca, Managua's municipal dump, where over 1500 people live and work. We feed and care for about fifty malnourished children under the age of ten.

There are lots more moments of light and joy in all of this than is sounds like there could be.
