About From Across the Pond...

I am 23 and a recent graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, where I earned a BS in Finance, Honors in Creative Writing, and proceeded to spend my days on the back of a garbage truck. I applied for numerous jobs in financial services, but couldn't find one that was any more attractive than carrying peoples' rubbish from the sidewalk to the hopper, so I held out for something better...

That something has turned out to be a volunteer journey to Cape Town, South Africa, beginning in June, where I will live for a year or longer as the book-keeper for a small non-profit firm (www.saep.org) that provides educational support for students in the townships around the city. I will also be teaching poetry classes and working to expand upon the outdoor activities that supplement SAEP's environmental program.

I hope to use this blipfoto journal as a way to catalog my experiences over in South Africa over the next year, both in terms of writing and photography. I also plan to use it as a way to stay connected with all my family and friends back in the U.S. while I'm gone, as well as highlight some of my students' work and biographies.
