joy slowly spreads a rainbow-strip of light on the cloudy sky,
as I drive eastwards along the motorway from Helsinki,
and the overarching sunset kindles the bare trees,
the roofs of the lakeside houses, and you ask
is it permitted to rejoice when the world?s grieving,

your joy is added to the world
it is mathematics and grace

I'm a perch, a dandelion and a wolf,
I'm an animal called man,
my knowledge, my joy is planted in the world,

a tendril of the wild vine turns a complete turn in 67 minutes,
and Gymnarchus niloticus can navigate water
head-first or tail-first,

I need knowledge, energy and
several electrical gadgets, the factory hums night and day,
our joy, astonishing.
