LIKES: Fresh air, walking, thought, bicycles, Attenborough programmes, photography, stances, peppers, carrots, the latter two drizzled with olive oil, garlic and basil, vitality, outsideness, Science, chocolate muffins, books and things.

INDIFFERENT TOWARDS: Most television, alcohol, fashion-electronics (yes, those), excessive personal grooming, the conventional ideal of beauty and most computer games except Descent (and I haven't even installed that recently), Desktop Tower Defence (v1.4) and (briefly) Bloxorz. Portal is also rather nice and HL2 isn't that bad, I suppose.

LOATHES: Oafishness, twattishness, chavviness, pikeyness, the military, inebriation, football (and related activities including homophobia, racism, xenophobia, violence and needlessly gobbing all over the pavement), ITV, bigotry, the Royal Mail including their subsidiary Parcelforce (and even more so their equivalents such as CityLink), Dabs.com, buses, taxis, vans, SUVs (singling out the BMW X5 for particularly concentrated despisement (as both a BMW and an SUV and (effectively) a van)), most other cars (especially when driven flamboyantly, aggressively or needlessly swiftly), climate change denialists, creationists and the ID brigade, cyclists who wear headphones/skip red lights/ride on the pavement giving the rest of us a bad name, people who walk too slowly in the middle of the pavement especially when they ebb from side to side slightly in time with your attempts to overtake, lecherousness, chauvinism and misogyny, coloured or stripey shirts with white collars (and in fact all office-clothing) and people disrespecting the planet.

In the past I have tried and failed to text-blog persistently; I registered on a couple of blogsites but did absolutely nothing except on h2g2 in 1999 when I should have been revising but have managed to consistently upload fresh pictures to Flickr until switching to RAW and developing a lengthy backlog.

This place at least offers the starting point of a picture to ensnare people and one post a day means that not too much accompanying garbage need be written. Since starting here I seem to have progressively written more and more although it says a lot that this really kicked in during the three-week period when I was restricted to a cameraphone and started whining about everything. My camera was returned and shortly upgraded but the complaints and griping have remained though the volume has levelled off and stabilised a little. I really don't hate the world and everyone in it; just the people who make portions of it unpleasant for others.

In the past I used to post photoshopped stuff to b3ta and tattyworld although I haven't been near the former recently as it's gone right down the tubes and tattyworld had disappeared the last time I checked.

I'd like to start doing something with all my pictures instead of just leaving them to fester on the hard drive but I'm not entirely sure what. Now that I have a decentish camera and have started using RAW to try and get rid of noise and artefaction I might try something.

Currently using a Nikon D80 (a close call with the 400D on features but it fitted my hand better rather than due to any brand loyalty) after nine months of Fujifilm Finepix s9500, two years with the s5000, eighteen months with a crap plastic-lens 1.3Mpx four-second-shutter-lag battery-compartment-held-on-by-tent-elastic thing (fortunately stolen from the car) after a couple of years of cameralessness since my Praktica BX20 started getting shutter issues after ten years or so. It's still in a bag on top of a cupboard a: just in case, b: because of crappy wishy-washy sentimentality and c: because it's worth absolutely bugger all secondhand. I'll get round to using it for an all-night star-trail shot at some point. Soon. Detailed whinging about the limitations of the s9500/9600 are available on request; I'd hate anyone to have to suffer as I did.

I would like to be able to just post pictures of something which I saw no matter what the quality but part of the reason for doing this is to try and improve my picture-taking. There's probably some kind of internal image quality/interestingness of depicted event or object/thumbnail snappiness algorithm in operation but I've given up trying to second-guess it and have thus generated a pile of second-choice and overflow edits here. It would be nice if the picture either illustrated or prompted the accompanying words but I fear there are already too many where there is little or no connection.
