Scallop @ Aldeburgh

Scallop
A sculpture to celebrate Benjamin Britten by Maggi Hambling

The sculpture was made specifically for Aldeburgh, which inspired so much of Britten's music. The phrase I hear those voices that will not be drowned (pierced through the steel, against the sky) is taken from Britten's opera 'Peter Grimes', which was itself based on a work by th Aldeburgh poet, George Crabbe.
