hopetoun monument

An East Lothian landmark, the Hopetoun Monument can be seen for miles. It sits on Garleton Hill just north of Haddington and was raised 'by public subscription in memory of Sir John Hope by the grateful peasants of East Lothian'. I can just imagine that conversation - 'oh dear, fellow peasant, the lord of the manor has died, shall we have a whip round and put an erection on that hill in his memory?'

Aye right.

I fiddled with this image for more impact.
