Jonathan

Meet Jonathan; the orphaned, injured baby seagull.

Dominic met Jonathan last night after work, scared and alone on the streets of Edinburgh with a nasty break in his wing. Being rather fond of poorly animals, Dom packed up the little seagull in a big box and brought him home.

Jonathan is temporarily living in our shed while we try and find the best place to take him. We have spent all day calling up bird sanctuary's, wildlife rescue centres, the RSPB and the SSPCA to try and find somewhere who will take him in and help rehabilitate him, rather than just put him down. Sadly, the general consensus seems to be that because seagulls are not endangered, it is just not worth their while fixing Jonathan's wing and it would be simpler to just put him to sleep.

Dom and I are not having this! So we are keeping him for tonight, feeding him hard boiled eggs (apparently seagulls like that!), pilchards and water; which he seems to be thoroughly enjoying.
Tomorrow we will be making the two hour drive to the Knoxwood Bird Sanctuary in Cumbria, which has a disabled bird wing with a no euthanize policy.

I've never been particularly fond of seagulls, I always thought they looked rather mean; but I have to say, Jonathan is very sweet and surprisingly tame...we'll be sad to see him go!

If anyone has any useful information on caring for baby seagulls or good sanctuary's around Fife, please do let me know.
