Time is broken

I awoke on the floor.

Above me was the relentlessly bright glare of fluorescent strip lights; all around me, a concrete floor; directly before my eyes, the cracked face of a cheap wristwatch.

I listened for the expected tick tick tick but there was no sound. As far as I could see, the watch had stopped at around half past four - but whether in the morning or afternoon, it was impossible to say.

The watch had nothing further to say on the matter. Almost without thinking, I slipped the dead watch into the pocket of my jeans.

But putting the matter of time to one side, there was a more immediate question to be answered: where was I?
