The Attic

Had to venture up into the attic/loft for something earlier today and got somewhat distracted whilst there.

There's something about an attic that is strangely appealing to me. It possibly goes back to my Mum and Dad's house which had a proper treasure trove of an attic; bags of old clothes and shoes that were never, ever going to see the light of day again, loads of old toys, irreparable valve radios, record players, books, prams, Christmas stuff... and SPIDERS. Loads and loads of huge hairy beasties and masses of thick cotton-wool like cobwebs all over the place. I'm not too keen on these creepy-crawlies and was always very wary of them even when my Dad put down some flooring in the loft so that we could set up our Scalextric track permanently. They didn't seem to want to move out when we moved in.

Looking at our attic now, after being in this house for six years I can see it going the same way. One puzzling thing though is the lack of any sign of arachnids. Do they treat new-builds with something that keeps spiders way? There's no webs up there at all that I can see, and certainly nothing crawling around either. Or does a house have to be a certain age before they move in, a sort of spider-free grace period?

As it was I found some really interesting bits'n'bobs that might make it on to here on their own merit. I also completely forgot about why I went up there in the first place and had to come down and retrace my movements to see if anything triggered the reason for climbing up there originally. Still trying to work that one out.
