Auchengeich Colliery Disaster

In September 1958 47 men were killed in the 'Geich' Mining Disaster.

The fan at the top of the mine caught fire and the flames spread along the pit. It had started just as a number of men were starting their shift and were making their way down the mine.

It is difficult these days to relate to the dangers the miners faced on a daily basis every time they descended the pits. We should never forget.

The memorial is just a mile or so down the road from me. I was going to take a photograph here, at the suggestion of George, a couple of months ago. Then I heard that they were starting work on an improved memorial to mark the 50th anniversary.

I have pictured the new centrepiece which is a bronze statue of a miner. The whole memorial site has been extended and is a fitting tribute. I may go back for another picture as this one is only a small part of it.
