Wednesday 2 December 2009: Deeply Symbolic I'm Sure

This is another in what could quite easily become a series of low light low colour grainy shots of urban landscapes. hpx put the idea into my head.

This is a tunnel for the footpath on the Water of Leith Path between Bonnington and Warriston. Above the tunnel is the railway spur that carries the trains that convery containers of Edinburgh's waste to foreign climates. I was hoping for a train to be parked on top of the bridge, but not today.

I'm sure this is deeply symbolic on so many levels. If Io wanted ot I could talk in detail about recovery and mental health, about emerging into the light, and if you are interested, I urge you to look at the Scottish Receovery Network, which is a superb organisation devoted to raising the expectation that people can and do recover from mental ill health.

During training the other day, a participant asked me if it was trite to write 'everyone has a right to good mental health'. Another participant answered by describing work in neighbourhoods where people when asked what leisure facilities they would like said 'those things are not for people like us from places like this.'

Also I know there are blippers that could be reading this who are having less than good times just now, and I was sort of thinking of them, and the many other folk who might be having a tough time just now for all sorts of reasons.

I know the outside of the tunnel is a bit burned out, but I like that. Sometimes the nature of being in darkness means that the light can hurt, and be unwelcoming.

Finally, sorry to Beck and Dave for not making it to the opening last night. Hope it went very well!

Have a good day, and evening.

Comments

  1. The burned out vagueness of the outside world can also be seen an indication of the undefined nature of the future.

    ~ stewartbremner

  2. There is a light at the end of the tunnel...
As for your query, it isn't Cockenzie. We have built a replica here in Dublin :)

  3. Lovely shot, light at the end of the tunnel is always good!

    ~ nina54

  4. Light at the end of the tunnel - but some unfortunates don't see it - and Christmas can be such a depressing time for those with mental health problems.

    ~ KathGordon

  5. A fine image indeed. On my screen the light doesn't look entirely burned out. I can still see detail just as I do when I emerge from a dark place into bright light and it hurts my eyes. Your image portrays what you've eloquently written.

The lovely thing about blip is I always find someone's image that inspires me and sparks a seed of new thoughts and images to try. I'm honoured to have inspired you :-)

  6. I like this little tunnel, and the many moods it seems to have depending on the weather and the season. I also like detail you've brought out in walls.

  7. This is great and your writing, as ever, thought-provoking

    ~ magpie

  8. Great shot & very well written blip :0)

    ~ Shona

  9. Nice shot and a lovely write up for others. I think everyone in life carries some burden on their shoulders, myself can just about see some light. Thanks!

    ~ queenie

  10. An all round thought provoking and encouraging blip.

Sometimes, the tunnel can feel safer than the light - the known versus the unknown. Sometimes people don't imagine that little things, a few minutes, can mean so much and make a difference. They can.

    ~ Helen

  11. Thanks for comments. Helen, small things can make big differences in recovery too. It's not rocket science, just humanity.

  12. Really like this. Moving from the dark into the light.

    ~ Gillipaw

  13. I find a very positive feeling to this; not just the light at the end of the tunnel, but the light entering the tunnel and reducing the gloom. :-)

    ~ Annie

  14. My neighbour's mate who owns the Ford usually parks on the road. My neighbour wants the car gone. He keeps asking but the car remains!
