New Brighton Pier At Night

I missed the quite splendid sunset tonight so a night shot of another local landmark will have to do.

The pier is 10 years old this year, so to celebrate the council spent $50,000 of its art in public places budget for a very swanky LED light system. The lights on each column are independently controlled, each column can be lit in a different colour allowing for dramatic sequences of colour changing, or subtle changes rolling along the columns.

I rather like the effect, before the lights were switched on earlier this year (21st June) the pier was quite a drab spot at night. Now with its techno light show it's enough to induce an epileptic fit in any passing pod of whales.

On November 5th every year the pier is used as the setting for a huge fireworks display, which is usually worth a look.

I liked the reflections on the beach on this shot.
