Every year since my dad died in 1998 we plant annuals and tend the perennials on the traffic island at our little corner. Today is Memorial Day and because we were away in California all last week, the island didn't get tidied up till late this afternoon. Our house is in the background, with the badminton net from Saturday's party. The corner we live on is called, Dogcorner, and no one can remember exactly why.

It was a strange day, we were surrounded in haze and smoke from at least 50 forest fires burning far away in Quebec, Canada, many out of control. The vapors and smoke were through the northeast US carried by strong winds. I can see the haze just barely in this photograph, but the air smelled very smokey. I cannot imagine how bad it must be closer to the fires, my heart goes out to the people, woodland creatures and trees that are suffering.

I've saved the best for last. Our beloved Swedish 'niece' had her first baby today, A precious little girl. Mother, child and trembling father are all doing well. The only problem is the ocean between us. Welcome, Elna Miranda!
