Marrakesh - Tanneries

You've probably seen a picture of tanneries, with squares of impossibly vivid colours. On the day we visited, all the vats were covered with skins drying slowly in the sun, so nothing to be seen. We were assured that the colours were underneath - if exposed they would bleach out.

On arrival, you are presented with a "bouquet" of mint to hold before your nose as the smell is pretty foul. In this tannery, dating back to the 12th century, signs of modernism were to be seen and all to the good. The workers sported long wellingtons to wear when walking in the vats and gloves to handle some processes.

Definitely worth a visit!
