True Colours

For Lovers

Another Sunday has come and gone. I can't believe how fast the days of 2011 are sweeping past me. It genuinely only seems like a few hours since I was standing on a stone beach with a bottle of chablis, bringing in the new year with my family. And look where we are: the last weekend in February!

First off, it seems that my father's belief that there is one weekend in February that heralds the proper onset of Spring [mentioned here] reigns true. The weather these past two days has just been incredible.

This particular Sunday seems to have been one for the couples among us. The boyfriend and girlfriend sat near me in the library who couldn't quite contain their love for each other. The man coaxing his girlfriend up the last stretch of Arthur's Seat. The courting swans performing their delicate ballet across the stage of Holyrood loch. And these two.

Standing with R watching them almost felt like an invasion. There was something about the way that she clung to him, something in their determination to gaze not at each other but into the sun as it slowly sank below the clouds, made me think that their love might be a little fragile. Maybe this sunset trip was something of a redemption. The optimist inside me hopes that it made them a little bit stronger.
