Blowing It

For a man who's keen on words
I can't half put my foot in it.
Everything's going well
and the next minute
an off the cuff remark,
an ill advised comment,
hits someone hard
when what I meant
was not what they
heard me say.

The morning of the day
I thought I'd blown it
I felt so alone it
floored me.
The private words
I reused in public
should not have been shared.
Someone who thought I cared
felt used, betrayed.
The mistake I made
could have resulted
in a different story.
