Cicada chirping

This is what comes out of these.

They are all over my garden but have proved very hard to get close to, they stop chirping when you get near and are often very well camouflaged, or they take off with a flurry of wings. This one was on a long pipe we have across the garden for tying beans and tomatoes up to.

They are so colourful up close and so detailed (and so noisy!) But it's a lovely sound, and today is a bright warm day, one of the few so it's been great out in the garden - very glad I didn't have to go to work!
