A Dog's Dinner

The Lumberjill and The Pilot.

Meet Marjory aged 91, Willy her 84 year old husband, and their Java dove Hanzel. Gretyl was still indoors.

As you can see, we met this elderly couple on the beach today. They've just arrived in their campervan from Blackpool.

Willy was a Luftwaffe pilot during the Second World War, flying Heinkel's and Junker 52's out of Poland.

He has a fascinating story to tell.

Starting off in the Flieger-HJ, or the Hilter Youth Flyers, he worked his way through the ranks passing all the exams and learning to pilot a glider, until he was old enough to join the airforce as a pilot.

Towards the end of the war he was transferred to Belgium where his squadron ran out of fuel and couldn't fly. He was then captured by the Americans and shipped as a prisoner of war to the United States.

Eventually he was sent home via Liverpool where the Commander of the interment camp gave him a job working with the youth groups and, to cut a long and fascinating story short, he stayed met his wife Marjorie and created a new career as a university lecturer.

Marjorie meanwhile was working with Timber Corps of the Women's Land Army felling trees in North Wales.

'Did you ever get any problems marrying 'the enemy'?
Never - not once. England's not like that'

..and the lesson learned today. It's the ordinary that really fascinates.
