Reflections

After a horrendous day yesterday weatherwise, today was the complete opposite. Calm but cool with a fresh coating of snow on the backbone of the Southern Alps - a breathtaking view of Lake Mahinapua, named after Mahinapua, a woman whose name refers to "a flower in the dim light of dawn or twilight".

Hubby was keen to take some back roads today, so from Lake Mahinapua we travelled through the small town of Rimu. It got its name from the tall red pines which were grew abundantly in the area. In the year 1882 gold was discovered to the west of the present settlement, it was not long before there were 500 miners. Rimu is rich in history and an interesting little settlement. From Rimu the back road took us through Kokatahi and round to the south of Lake Kaniere, where my best photos of this lake were taken. There was not a ripple with another breathtaking scene of amazing reflections. Further up the lake there was a slight breeze and no reflections to be had. We took a look at Dorothy Falls where I practised trying to get the silky smooth water which turned ok.

A great day here on the West Coast with us now in Hokitika. We move on further south tomorrow for another couple of nights and I'm really hoping to fill in the gaps of this wonderful holiday.

You might prefer to look at this one in large - enjoy :)
