Sgwarnog: In the Field

Barker Tower

I was in York for a work event, but managed a quick wander round the city before my train home, including a habitual loading up of reading matter at Minster Gate Bookshop.

Barker Tower sits at the south western end of Lendal Bridge, which lies halfway between the station and the Minster. It has a very distinctive curved roof, which you can study as the base of the tower is at river level, and the roof is at eye level from the bridge. The tower pre-dates the bridge by five centuries, and was effectively one side of a toll gate on the River Ouse, with boats having to pay to move up and down river.

It was the lichen patterns on the tile caught my eye today.
