Making flowers

By kind permission of F's lovely mother.

I finally made good on a promise to show a friend how to crochet this morning. She was an absolute natural, and honestly one of the best things in life is sharing a skill whilst drinking tea a good mile away from any of your own housework. Crochet is the quickest and dirtiest of the yarn-based crafts - you can get away with so much less precision than with knitting, less fiddling than with tatting and less equipment than spinning. Plus, unless you are making tiny white doilies, the stitches are good and big and you can do a child's hat in hours, and definitely before it's so warm that they don't need one any more.

The photo shows a very patient little girl happily inserting a hook into a prototype rosette whilst saying "one in here, one in here, one in here..."
