Was It Really So Long Ago

RAF Boxted

The airfield at Langham took the name of RAF Boxted, the name of another nearby village so as to avoid confusion with RAF Langham in Norfolk. It is distinguished by the USAAF 56th Fighter Group who came to Langham in 1943. Flying the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, it was the most successful of the Eighth Air Force groups in air-to-air combat.

Today, some of the original buildings remain, but much of the three original runways are gone, returned to the fruit orchards in place before the building of the airfield. Pictured is the airfield memorial in Park Lane, Langham sited at the end of the main runway. A small private grass air strip occupies a portion of that original runway.
