Jack O'Mitre

This is my entry for the Wide Angle Wednesday Challenge  -  this weeks theme being Signs & Symbols, and kindly hosted by Chantler 63:-

This old coaching house is situated on the trans-Pennine road between Huddersfield and Rochdale and used to be a Stopping-off point for workers moving their wool from one side of the Pennines to the other;  there was also  a “House of Entertainment”  here  -  a sort of a circus with shows where animals and birds entertained

How the pub got its name isn’t clear, but one idea is that it is named after a local called Jack who used to call at the pub for a stout, and the mitre part of the name refers to a crown green bowling green where the car park now is.
