Goma

GomA offers a programme of temporary exhibitions and workshops. It displays work by local and international artists as well as addressing contemporary social issues through it major biannual projects.

Opened in 1996, the Gallery of Modern Art is housed in a neoclassical building in Royal Exchange Square in the heart of Glasgow city centre. It was built in 1778 as the townhouse of William Cunninghame, a wealthy Glasgow Tobacco Lord. The building has undergone a series of different uses. It was bought in 1817 by the Royal Bank of Scotland, after which it became the Royal Exchange, and was reconstructed for this between 1827 and 1832 with many additions to the building, including the cupola above.

In 1954 Glasgow District Libraries moved the Stirling's Library into the building, and when the library returned to Miller street, the building was refurbished to house the city's contemporary art collection.

While in Glasgow today I visited GoMA, and  although the exhibits don't appeal, I like the building.

Thank you for the nice comments, stars and hearts, which have put this picture in the Popular pages, much to my delight!
