A concrete love affair

Glasgow's Charing Cross

BACK BLIP on 35mm

After visting Stirling, Perth, Dundee, Glen Spean, The Great Glen, Loch Cluanie, Glen Shiel, Plockton, Kyleakin, Broadford, Portree, Trotternish, Glenbrittle, Isle of Sleat, Morar, Glenfinnan and Oban. Glasgow was still the highlight for me.

My travel companion Kieran was blown away by the scale and energy of this magnificent metropolis. And despite having visited it many many times it still surprises me. With Kieran at the wheel I looked left to see the city centre buildings all the way from the Erskine Bridge, it felt as if we were arriving by air as toytown sized vans and cars queued at suburban traffic lights as we sped passed on the M8. The scale of the city is amazing, its the only place a three-level motorway interchance could not completely dominate the surrounding cityscape, indeed all that concrete rather suits the place! I love the grid pattern core, the west end, and the views of the city centre from Tradestone with gothic spires rising above the concrete patch work.

EXTRA PHOTO
Like so many across the UK I was very upset to see TV pictures of this wonderful wonderful building albaze in May 2014. Completed in 1907 it has to be Scotland’s finest 20th century building, a remarkable building which is triumph of form and function. It is truly superb. After the fire the rebuild has began, but its going to take a while. If any city can get back on its feet after such a devastating event, its Glasgow.
