Sgwarnog: In the Field

Abandoned

Or what happens when a thunderstorm erupts over a football ground in the thirty minutes leading to kick-off.  The occasion, Round 2 of the Johnstones Paint Trophy with Bradford City hosting Barnsley.

Having had 10 minutes watching the players "warm-up", that is get drenched to the skin, we were then treated to the referee and his two assistants performing a pitch inspection. Once we witnessed the part of the inspection where a ball was thrown high into the air and saw that it landed with a splat, but no bounce, we could all see what conclusion they would reach. So before the match had kicked off, it was abandoned.  Or rather, postponed as you can't abandon something which has not yet started.

Still, several thousand people got to experience what it is like to stand behind a waterfall.
