Curzon St Cemetery (Saturday 6th February 2016)

On Friday I attended the funeral at St Mary's church of my friend D., who had died suddenly in her cottage in Mill Street on Blue Monday at the age of 87.
I had known her since the nineties when she was living in a ground-floor flat in Bath. She had had a rich and varied life living for example in Zanzibar, Johannesburg, Spain and in the UK, and had had several different careers in drama, retail, food, medicine, astrology and mental health. She is thought to have been the first white baby to be born in Zanzibar. Her father had been the Governor of North Borneo but though her family were well-to-do she lived modestly and quietly.
I took no pictures on Friday as a mark of respect but met members of her family and friends from all over at the reception at Marden House. I was surprised to see one of the guests was the UKIP deputy chairman and former Tory MP Neil Hamilton, whose views I feel sure were not shared by D.
I did not expect to see her daughters again as they live abroad and I had only ever met them at D's cottage, but when I went to find her grave at the cemetery the following day, just opposite my home, my visit coincided with theirs. We had a long chat about her and they said they would contact me when they were at D's house in future to invite me over.
