Fallen ...

I don't know when this tall conifer was felled in a storm - it's been like this for some years now - but looking at it today I found myself imagining the drama of its end - the creaking turning to splintering and then the great crashing of its branches among the other trees, followed by the thud of its long trunk on the ground. The splintered wood at its base is still intact in its jagged wound, though I imagine some of it will now be softening in the constant damp, and the trunk is bright with moss along the top.

My extra photo today was taken nearby, and is a familiar scene shot, as usual, on a day when there was little to photograph. But the hills were snowy and the air cold and grey, and I've been faffing with this version to make it slightly different.
