Sleeping on a lead mine

The hostel at Helvellyn is situated on an old mine, first opened, the mine that is, not the hostel, in the late 1600s! Lead was mined here and also silver. The mine closed in 1962.

We awoke to a beautiful morning and had a quick wander about before setting off for Edinburgh to drop one daughter off, then returning to Oban to take the other daughter to the Mull ferry.

The area around the hostel has been landscaped, but the evidence of the spoil heaps is still there. A quick look along the track above the hostel showed the beginning of the path to Helvellyn - this picture is my extra for the day.
