Don't Give Up . . .

The Day Job!

After yesterday's visit to the Vintage market, at which I stayed for only a few minutes because it was so cold, I ventured out again today and sat briefly in the walled Quaker burial ground, no longer used for its purpose because there is now no active Quaker presence in the town, but managed by a Friends Group as a conservation area to support and attract wildlife, where I like to sit for a rest on my way to or returning from shopping.

Records show well over 350 burials in this small plot between 1698 and 1937 but now only 19 graves remain, most notable of which is that of Bernard Barton (1784-1849) known as the Quaker Poet, who lived in Woodbridge for most of his life, writing books and hymns while working in a local bank.

He also became close friends with the writers Robert Southey and Charles Lamb.  It was Charles Lamb who advised him not to give up his job at the bank and attempt to become a full time author.
