Ornamental Blackbirds

My ornamental blackbirds
have an ornamental nest
in which they've laid
their sugar-coated eggs.

The nest I made by plaiting
some fancy yellow socks.
The blackbirds seem quite happy
and it's better than a box.

A box would just be silly and
then no-one would believe me
which, even though I'm crackers,
would inevitably grieve me.

My ornamental blackbirds
make a rather splendid show
but this story ends quite sadly:
I'm about to play the crow.

Those eggs, so carefully chosen,
for their colours all to match,
I'm very sad to tell you
will never, ever hatch.

You knew they wouldn't last long.
Each egg is going south.
You've guessed, of course,
they're heading for my tummy through my mouth!

Yum!
