In memoriam

A glorious day in Edinburgh today. After lunch we visited Rosebank Cemetery in Pilrig, where some of Mrs M's family are buried. This cemetery has a number of notable graves, including several well-known shipping magnates such as Christian Salveson.

I noticed a sign to the memorial for the Gretna Rail Disaster of 22 May 1915, in which 215 soldiers of the 1st/7th Battalion The Royal Scots were killed. This Blip shows the memorial and the extra picture the wording at the base of the cross.

Five trains collided and caught fire, killing well over 200 soldiers on their way to fight at Gallipoli. It was and is Britain's worst ever rail disaster.
