Long-legged fly

It's been a day of preparation for a walk that Pete's leading tomorrow as part of National Insect Week. This involved the whole family heading out to Thorpe Meadows to catch a representative range of insects, followed by preparation of interpretative materials, which was surprisingly time-consuming. As we had no idea of numbers, we needed to have some activities that could be pursued independently.

This is a Dolichopus sp., one of the long-legged flies that are widespread at this time of year, especially in damp areas with luxuriant vegetation. They characteristically have a greenish metallic sheen, and eyes that appear multicoloured.
