West Kennet Long Barrow, Avebury, Wiltshire

It is estimated this neolithic long barrow (an elongated burial ground) was built in 3650 B.C !
In the deafening silence inside, I understood why it is thought these places were meant as doorways for the sleeping dead to re-enter the womb of their old mother Earth.
Being inside a place this old, thinking of the sweat, tears, possibly blood, passion and love which drove these people to move these enormous boulders with their bare hands to construct this huge burial chamber filled us with awe.
Standing proud a few hundred meters away and commanding the landscape for miles around is Silbury hill, the greatest neolithic mound in Europe.
And about a mile to the north is Avebury stone circle, in the middle of which now lies Avebury village. In my opinion, Stonehenge (though impressive in its own right) pales in comparison.
All three places and the multitude of neolithic monuments nearby are highly recommended to anyone in need of readjusting their importance in the scale of human history.
