"Any color you want, as long as it's black...!"

Many thanks to Bobsblips who’s running Wide-Angle-Wednesday so well; he’s suggested “colours” as the theme for this week.

Henry Ford is often quoted as saying “You can have any color you like as long as it’s black”. In fact it seems this is a shortened version of the actual quote, made in 1909 to his salesmen, which was “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black."

Apparently this wasn’t quite true so was probably said in jest, as at that time the Model T was available in a wide range of colours, including Fire-Engine-Red and Hunter-Green. However I understand that there were periods during the car’s production run when black was indeed the only colour – for example, at the time his biography was published in 1922, he was experimenting with the assembly line, trying to cut costs, and the fast-drying paint required for "full-speed" assembly was only available in black.

I should, of course, point out that many other colours, makes and models of car are available nowadays…!
