Grapes are not Profitable?

I grew up in this area surrounded by acres of Thompson Grapes like the ones in this photo. But most of the vineyards have been torn out and almond orchards have been planted in their place. But now the almond farmers are hearing of a 50% decrease in the price per pound for their almonds......and those who still have their grape vineyards are finding an even smaller market for their grapes. Raisins are still possible and Champagne is a possibility if the sugar levels are not too high; but there is an overabundance of juice for wine, so no money there. Small farmers are especially in trouble if they don't have a market for their crop. There is a lot of angst around here. But there are very few small farmers still around, the big guys are buying up their farms right and left. Hubby's Aunt, who we are visiting, told us they sold all their land to a big farmer with the provision that they can live in the house for the rest of their lives. They are both in their late 80s, so the buyer was willing to take the risk of waiting on the part of the land with the house on it until later.....he has the vineyards he can farm now!! Since he has many different crops, he will be fine.....even in this disastrous year.
Thanks for the great response to my fruit covered tree yesterday. I am loving the fresh fruit.....but have a bit of a tummy ache from a little overindulgence!   Opps.....I will be more cautious tomorrow.
