What WasThat?

All houses are haunted, especially ones over 150 years old: by wind, settling boards, gurgling pipes, a daddy longlegs batting a lampshade, someone walking in the upstairs apartment (though the living residents are away just at the moment). Like most dogs and cats, Lola is finely tuned to any rogue sound-wave within perhaps a fifty yard perimeter, and no doubt further if the sound is loud enough; our house is encircled by a moat of sonic sensibility. Unlike cats though, Lola is permanently on guard, ready to rush the door.
