Framed in the gloom

Holy Trinity church lies beside a field on a small hill at the foot of the Bishop's Glen. This afternoon the remaining leaves, the tufts of reeds, were luminous in the gloom, though there was a shifting patch of blue sky that kept closing and reopening above the hills as I went for a short walk after a vigorous discussion of the nature of the Kingdom of God.

The church looks very small and narrow from this angle, but it nevertheless occupies an important place in the lives of the living who attend and the dead who lie around - to quote, however roughly, Philip Larkin ...
