Lintz Valley Murder

Today we did one of our regular walks along the path that once was the Derwent Valley Railway.  This is a picture of Lintz Valley Railway Station and in 1911 it was the scene of a murder.  The 60 year old Station Master, Joseph Wilson, was shot when closing up his office at the station.  He did not die immediately but was unable to communicate who had shot him.

It is thought the motive for the murder was robbery as he was in the habit of carrying the takings from the day back to his house which was only about 50 yards away.

Nobody was convicted of the crime although the chief suspect was the relief porter Samuel Atkinson.  Although he was sent for trial, the chief constable could offer no evidence against him so he was released.
