Splitgill

I had to make do with a short walk through a rather boring intensively-farmed landscape today, but it was not without interest. I've learnt to check any polythene covered straw bales at this time of year for this remarkable fungus which can emerge from any slight split in the wrapping. It is Schizophyllum commune or Splitgill, traditionally found on fallen branches of deciduous trees, but now quite common in this new artificial habitat.
