Dunedin Railway Station

The weather is really grim today.  Heavy rain and cold too.  We had decided to go on a drive around the Otago Peninsula and go to Larnach Castle.  However, the hotel staff strongly advised us not to as it was very windy and  two cruise ships were in port and their passengers would probably have booked every place on the guided tours.

So we decided to spend the day in the city on foot.  The staff in the i-site were really helpful and suggested a few things for us to do.  We had a look around Dunedin Public Art Gallery which was founded in 1884 and is the country's oldest gallery.  

From here we walked down to Dunedin Railway Station which took 20 years to build, was built on reclaimed swampland and finally completed in 1906.  Very ornate building with the mosaic floor tiles celebrating the steam engine.  Stone for the building was transported from further south in NZ and also granite from Aberdeen.  The tiles for the walls in the foyer were especially made by Royal Doulton in the UK.
