The Edge of the Wold

Finally, I'm managing a backblip or two from our trip to Spain in October.  This was on our first full day staying with S & B in their house near Alicante.  It was a day to recover from the journey from Cumbria the afternoon and evening before, while being ever so well looked after.

B had never seen a locust on the property before.  This one obligingly spent several hours on the thick glass of the conservatory admiring its reflection.  The photo doesn't really convey any sense of scale, so I would estimate that this giant grasshopper was three inches in length.

After darkness, another large insect, Mandy the Mantis (see Extra) appeared in her regular spot under the lights of the entrance gates.  She was making regular sorties to catch flies.  I didn't quite manage to focus on her head while snatching a photo before she disappeared off to visit the neighbours.
