Patience and Poise

Today was the 25th annual opening day of the Bellingham Farmers Market, an eagerly anticipated event after our seemingly endless winter. The weather could have been better, but it didn't stop a goodly number of people from showing up.

Before ringing the bell to open the market, there were a couple of informal speeches and the traditional cabbage toss. The mayor of Bellingham is traditionally the "tosser" of the cabbage, but unfortunately, she'd had a death in the family the day before and was unable to attend.

A stand-in from a local nonprofit with strong ties to the market was recruited to catch the cabbage, and The Cabbage Princess, seen here, stood in for the mayor, instead of being the catcher. She'd waited patiently and with great poise through the speeches, but in the moment shown here, she'd looked over at her mother, and quickly had to steady her cabbage, which was trying to make an escape.

Do take a look at the extra -- The Cabbage Princess' eye-catching boots were perfect for this early spring engagement!

It was grand to chat with many of the vendors and to bring home fresh eggs, pea shoots, chives, tulips, bread, cookies, earrings, and more. I feel like spring is really here now!
